If you’re using PowerPoint 2003 and receiving an error that your PPT file is corrupt, then we may have the answer for you. Microsoft issued an update around 4/15/11, which actually causes the problem. Fortunately, this can be easily resolved by uninstalling the update and hiding the update file so it won’t be reinstalled in the future. Here are the steps:
Windows Vista/7:
Go to Control Panel,
Programs and Features,
Check the Show Updates box at top of window,
Under Office 2003 or PowerPoint 2003 find the update listed with (KB2464588) in the name,
Right-click on the update and select Uninstall.
Next you’ll have to prevent it from being reinstalled automatically again by hiding it.
To hide the update:
Go to Control Panel,
Windows Updates
Select the Check for Updates link on the left side,
Once it has completed, click on the link to view the pending updates. Locate this update again, uncheck it and then right click to hide this file. In some version you might have to expand a list and then highlight the file and select “do not show this file”.
Windows XP:
Go to Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs,
Check the Show Updates box at top of window,
Under Office 2003 or PowerPoint 2003 find the update listed with (KB2464588) in the name,
Select the update and select Uninstall.
Next you’ll have to prevent it from being reinstalled automatically again by hiding it.
To hide the update:
Open Internet Explorer and navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
You will be presented with an Express and a Custom button,
Click the Custom button and let it check for updates (may take a few minutes)
Once it has completed checking, locate the update, uncheck it, click the + to expand the description, and check “Don’t show this update again”
Select Review and Install updates from the top and continue to install other pending updates if desired.
