How Nanotechnology is Impacting the IoT

Written by EPTAC Staff | Sep 2, 2021 1:06:35 PM

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology continues to revolutionize the way we live our lives. By the end of 2019 there were 7.6 billion active IoT devices, and the technology is still in its infancy. What’s the next step in IoT? Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology will pave the way for the Internet of Nano Things (IoNT), and adoption of these devices will soar. But first, what is nanotechnology?

According to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, “Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers,” and it will revolutionize the IoT.

Versatile Devices
As the word “Nano” implies, devices will become smaller with the onset of nanotechnology. Manufacturers of nanoscale devices embrace nanoscale processes by using the National Nanotechnology Initiative in order to help with equipment and staff.

Additionally, the smaller IoT devices become, the more versatile they will be. IoT sensors will be able to be put where you never could before, making it particularly advantageous for industrial purposes. This added accessibility and versatility could lead to a move into the Internet of Everything, resulting in $14.4 trillion added to the economy.

Energy Efficiency
The IoT faces challenges in energy efficiency with short battery lives and energy-hungry devices that can raise users’ electrical bills, however, the IoNT will be the solution to this problem. IoNT and the smaller devices used require less power to operate. Nanomaterials also can improve battery energy and efficiency. With a longer battery life, more intensive applications for nanotechnology and IoT can be used. Once the IoT becomes more energy efficient, it will become more enticing to a broader range of users.

Affordability
The upfront costs associated with IoT technology have caused a barrier to smart home technology adoption even though smart home technology is proven to be energy efficient and convenient. Although IoT technologies have been becoming more affordable, nanotechnology will help push this trend along even further since manufacturers can produce more with fewer materials. However, this transition will not be immediate, and nanotechnology will likely be more expensive than traditional devices at first given the cost of nanoengineering. As more companies pursue nanotechnology, the methods of nanoengineering and manufacturing will improve, and it will become cheaper to work with nanomaterials. As a result, nanotechnology devices will eventually become more affordable.

Sustainability
IoT sensors can help conserve energy in the long run but running an extensive network of devices can take a good amount of electricity and lead to carbon emissions, however, IoNT technology can provide a solution. The IoNT will help future IoT devices consume less power since we already know from above that nanotechnology is energy efficient. Nanotechnology can also lead to more sustainable methods for producing electricity in the IoT.

Data Accuracy
Nanotech will improve the accuracy of IoT devices’ data gathering and processing functions. Smaller gadgets could measure data on a more precise level. Larger devices would become more accurate, too, since nanomaterials would provide a higher relative surface area for sensors. Users will be able to perceive things they never could before, making the IoT more versatile than ever.

Nanotechnology will help revolutionize the IoT. For manufacturers, this means future jobs will involve a different, unique set of skills or higher educational requirements. That’s why staying up-to-date with the latest training and certifications is important to help you and your employees further their careers. EPTAC offers a variety of online and in-person solder training courses and IPC certifications to assist you with your education needs.
