NASA’s Adoption of J-STD-001 Space Addendums

Posted on 29st January, 2015 by Leo Lambert

We have received numerous inquiries regarding NASA's adoption of the J-STD-001 Space Addendum. NASA has indeed implemented J-STD-001 ES and the J-STD-001 documents. For further information, please visit this link for Frequently Asked Questions about the J-STD-001 Adoption.

After a thorough collaboration lasting eight years between NASA, the IPC’s Assembly Joining and Processes Committee, and the Space Addendum for the soldering standard J-STD-001 along with its training program, NASA officially adopted IPC J-STD-001ES for all Programs and Projects on October 17, 2011. In line with this adoption, the previous NASA standards for soldering, NASA-STD-8739.2, and NASA-STD-8739.3, were discontinued as of the same date. To provide further guidance on the implementation of J-STD-001ES, NASA published NASA-STD-8739.6, Implementation for NASA Workmanship Standards in 2012.

Additionally, NASA introduced another essential document, NASA-STD-8739.6, “IMPLEMENTATION REQUIREMENTS FOR NASA WORKMANSHIP STANDARDS”, which was approved on September 5, 2012. This document outlines quality requirements for the manufacture of electronic assemblies and electrostatic discharge (ESD) control, serving as a valuable supplement to the existing standards listed in Table 1."

In Table 1 it lists: "Space Application Electronic Hardware Addendum to J-STD-001E Requirements for Soldered electrical and Electronic Assemblies.”
