RIT Program Helps Fill Skills Gap by Training Unemployed Vets

Posted on 20st June, 2016 by Leo Lambert

When Sean Phelan interviewed for a technical trainer position at Harris Communication Systems in March, he realized he lacked some of the necessary electronics skills for the job.

Now enrolled in the Veterans and Displaced Workers in Manufacturing electronics training program, Phelan informed Harris about his participation and was recently contacted for a follow-up interview.

With hopes that this intensive four-week program will bridge the gap to securing a job in the thriving electronics sector of the Rochester economy, Phelan remains optimistic.

The program, designed for 20 unemployed or underemployed individuals, is led by the Rochester Institute of Technology and participants are referred by the Veterans Outreach Center and RochesterWorks! The approval of the State Department of Labor is also required for each applicant.

Distinguished by its emphasis on hands-on training, continuous instructor feedback, and strong connections with local companies that may hire participants, the program aims to equip individuals with a targeted skill set to support the growth of local industries.

Chairman of RIT’s Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology, S. Manian Ramkumar, expressed the program's mission to facilitate the expansion of local industry through targeted skills development.
